It’s not every day that people have the opportunity to travel to Europe, and we had a wonderful time there! This year was the Toronto Northern Lights’ “year off” from the Barbershop Harmony Society’s International Convention, so in lieu of attending the convention (though many members, including us, did also attend the convention) the chorus traveled Europe to tour England, Germany, and Sweden!
Greg and Chris went with the chorus to England, where they sang with the Grand Central Chorus in a joint show in Derby. Our gracious hosts showed us a time worthy of their name (Grand!) and all too soon it was on to the next leg of the journey!
In Germany, we joined 4’n More for a benefit concert in the beautiful Neustadt an der Weinstrasse. Our chorus enjoyed a wonderful reception upon arrival at sunset, and performed in a beautiful hall for a bracing and enthusiastic audience! Once again, our time here was short-lived, and before we could blink, it was on to Sweden, where Greg and Chris were to meet their better half.
Reuven and Jonah – along with several other chorus members – joined the Toronto Northern Lights for their final stop: Sweden. Beginning in Stockholm, the chorus was hosted by the EntertainMen. There, we took part in their annual fundraising concert as well as getting a great tour of the city and having a much-needed day of rest! The choruses both then moved out to Nykoping for the Society of Nordic Barbershop Singers’ annual convention. There, we had the opportunity to perform for the Swedish audience as a quartet as well, and even met Hanfris, the Barbershop Harmony Society’s first Spanish international quartet competitors!
It’s this kind of opportunity that shows us how barbershop singing means being a part of a community. In all these places we visited, it felt like being among good friends, and the music brought us closer together in body, mind, and spirit! We can’t wait to see all of the friends we made again, and make new ones, the next time we gather together! And we hope that if any of those who we met with on our trip find themselves in Toronto during their travels, they’ll look us up! Thanks for the memories!
